Oral cancer, also called as mouth cancer refers to a type of cancer of neck and head. Oral cancers include any cancerous growths in the tissues of oral cavity. Oral cancers can originate in any type of tissue and cell of the oral cavity. Squamus cell carcinomas account for most of the oral cancers. Almost all types of oral cancers are highly aggressive and show high degree of metastasis. Early stage symptoms of oral cancer include persistent red/white patches, non-healing and recurrent ulcers, unusual bleeding, sudden tooth mobility, unusual surface changes and swelling or enlargement in oral cavity. An indurated area, paresthesia or dysesthesia of the tongue or lips, airway obstruction, difficulty in eating and swallowing, persistent pain and altered vision are some of the late stage symptoms. Alcohol consumption, tobacco chewing, smoking and poor oral hygiene are major causes leading to oral cancer.
